Storm Surge, Rate Surge: Florida’s Hurricane Insurance Meltdown
Share
Florida’s 2024 legislative session has made one thing painfully clear: the people in charge are more interested in controlling the narrative than solving the state’s actual problems. While lawmakers distract the public with culture war theatrics, Florida’s most urgent issues are getting worse — and fast.

📈 Crisis? What Crisis?
Let’s start with the one hitting nearly every homeowner in the wallet: skyrocketing property insurance.
Florida now has the highest home insurance rates in the country. In many areas, rates have doubled — or worse. Insurers are fleeing the state, leaving behind an underfunded Citizens Property Insurance Corporation (the “insurer of last resort”) and stressed homeowners wondering if they’ll lose their homes to the market, not a hurricane.
But rather than pass meaningful consumer protections or address the root causes, lawmakers have passed bailouts for insurers, stripped homeowners of their rights to sue, and blamed frivolous lawsuits for the mess. Spoiler alert: most of those lawsuits were from people trying to get their rightful claims paid after disasters.
